Mihaela (Miki) Bogdan completed high school in 2002 and received a high score of 8.39 on her Baccalaureate exam. She is 20 years old and is the eldest of five children. Her father rings the church bell twice a day for $15 each month and works as a religion teacher at the village school for a similar amount. According to Miki, her mother made a big sacrifice by leaving the family to seek employment in Italy so that the family could continue to send the children to school.
In describing her situation, she writes, “In Constanta you have to pay high fees to go to University and my parents cannot afford this as I also have a brother who is starting high school this year in Constanta. He will have to commute by bus to Constanta. My other two sisters are at school in the village but in another year Valentina will have to commute to [the high school in] Constanta.”
Miki was awarded a scholarship in 2002 and is currently attending the Catholic University of St. Teresa’s in Bucharest and is studying to become a teacher.
Her scholarship is sponsored by Elizabeth Morin of Atlanta, Georgia.
