Mihail Enascut, 20, is originally from the village of Sabaoani in the Moldova province of Romania. Upon his graduation from high school in 2002, he confronted the financial impossibility of a university education. He is from a family of twelve children, six of whom are still in school. Of his family, Mihail reflects, "Even if we lacked money, [my siblings and I] never missed out on parental care and love."
He spent his post-graduate year living at home but did not abandon his hopes of attending a university. During that year, he worked side-by-side with his father on the family's land, and in his spare time, he prepared to take the entrance exam for admission to his dream university.
Now, he is enrolled in his first year at the University of Physical Education and Sport in Oradea, Romania. Mihail spends long days in the classroom before participating in evening training programs in several sports. He participates in the university's programs in swimming, gymnastics, handball, archery, football and wrestling. He has aspirations of becoming a wrestling champion and began enrolling in competitions within the first few months of school.
Mihael is enjoying his university experience. He writes, "I am doing what I have always wanted to do - sports. I have always dreamt about (this)." Upon graduating with a university degree, Mihail aspires to become a coach or trainer, but not before winning a few titles and championships of his own. It is these goals that keep him focused and motivated on his studies and training.
Mihail's scholarship is supported by Miss Laura Walker of Durham, North Carolina.
